If someone had told me "gravedigger heroine, rotting kingdom, morally suspicious men" I would have said yes immediately and started reading before they finished the sentence. Crown Me Dead by Liv Zander is exactly that kind of book — dark, atmospheric, and completely impossible to put down.

Elara has grown up surrounded by death. She's practical, sharp, and completely unbothered by things that would send most people running. So when a mysterious and deeply untrustworthy man shows up with a deal — seduce the dying king, become his queen, take his place — she doesn't flinch. She negotiates. I loved her instantly.

The world Zander has built here is genuinely unsettling in the best way. There's a curse rotting the kingdom from the inside out, and the author doesn't shy away from showing you exactly what that looks like. It gets dark. It gets a little gross. If you're squeamish, maybe have a snack nearby to offset the vibes.

What kept me glued to the pages though was the tension — specifically the kind where you genuinely cannot figure out who to trust. Every character is hiding something and just when you think you've worked it out, the rug shifts again. The slow-burn romantic tension sits right on top of that mystery and it works so well together.

At 270 pages it's a quick read, which makes the cliffhanger ending feel like a personal attack. I'm not over it. Book two was immediately purchased.

Bottom line: If you like dark romantasy with a clever heroine, morally grey men, and an atmosphere thick enough to chew — Crown Me Dead is your next read. It's on Kindle Unlimited so you have absolutely no excuse.
